Make a business for yourself boy set some goals
“Make a business for yourself boy, set some goals. Make a fair diamond out of dusty coals.” – B.O.B. Outkast.
This song debuted in September of 2000, and became quite controversial a couple of years later during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, as the acronym of the title means “Bombs Over Baghdad”. Controversy aside, this lyric and song is a #LyricToLiveLifeBy for two main reasons.
First, the rhythm and beat of this song is and was completely different from anything else that was out there when it debuted, and some would say even today. With a very upbeat rhythm (155 bpm), this song hits from note ONE, the fast rhyming along with unique beats broke the mold for what hip hop was in the 2000s. NOTE: Can you break the mold in your business or industry?
Second, the lyric itself is GREAT. It focuses on entrepreneurship for an individual, goal setting and making something out of what you were given in life, whether it’s something or nothing. This reminds me of my friend Todd. Todd grew up like I did, in a small town near me of 7,000 people. His parents were divorced, he didn’t have the greatest home life growing up, yet his mother did her damndest to ensure food was on the table and her boys were loved. Todd graduated from high school with me and went on to BIG things. He’s worked his way up the ladder of big business, first as a consultant and then as an entrepreneur, starting a few different companies. He’s sat at the table and played in a World Series Of Poker tournament, and been across the table from executives with millions of dollars on the line. This song lyric epitomizes his journey to me. Do whatever you can to be a Todd and break the mold in your own business and industry.
